Ash Wednesday in the Mission

Congregations that have declared their intent to provide sanctuary to particular undocumented immigrants and refugees who might be seized by Donald Trump's ICE force gathered to walk through the streets on this Christian day of remembrance of our human failings and fragility. St. Agnes (Catholic), St. John of God (Catholic), and St. John the Evangelist (Episcopal) have taken active steps to serve in this manner.

After processing through the neighborhood, a growing crowd halted before the doors of St. John's to ring bells and sing our determination to resist assaults on our neighborhoods.

This felt a potent way to mark the beginning of Lent. One wise speaker countered our knowledge of our inadequacy: "we each do what we can ... this is what God calls us to ..."
